Silver Crash: Silver prices shocked markets on March 2, 2026, plunging nearly 7% in under two hours after briefly crossing the crucial $100 mark. The metal dropped from $100.13 to around $87.41, even as gold surged toward $5,415 amid escalating US–Iran tensions. The sudden crash was driven by profit-booking, algorithmic selling, a rising U.S. dollar, and fears of an economic slowdown impacting silver’s industrial demand.

The US-Iran conflict escalated dramatically after Kuwaiti air defences mistakenly shot down three U.S. fighter jets during Iran-related operations, even as a fourth American service member died from injuries sustained in earlier strikes. Israel widened its military campaign by targeting Hezbollah’s intelligence leadership in Beirut and launching strikes across Lebanon. With oil prices surging, global markets sliding, and political pressure mounting on President Donald Trump ahead of midterms, the crisis now threatens to spiral into a broader regional war.
  • Investment in Gold Could Be 2026’s Most Dependable Asset, According to World Gold Council
Investment in Gold could become a key strategy in 2026 as global markets trade near 20-year high valuations, inflation remains sticky around 3%, and financial leverage rises sharply, according to a February 2026 report by the World Gold Council. The Council argues that with bonds losing some of their traditional protective power and equity markets appearing stretched, gold remains under-owned in global portfolios and continues to offer diversification, downside protection and inflation-hedging benefits.

India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) has revised the retail jewellery sector’s outlook to neutral for FY27 while sharply raising its FY26 revenue growth estimate to 23% year-on-year, driven largely by record-high gold prices. Despite expectations of a steep drop in jewellery volumes due to elevated prices, organised jewellers are projected to outperform unorganised players, supported by festive demand, asset-light expansion, steady profitability, and stronger credit profiles. • Trump Tariffs Fears are Driving Gold’s Latest Market Moves
Although gold has not been directly targeted by Trump tariffs, fears surrounding broader trade measures have significantly reshaped the global gold market. Since late 2024, nearly 800 tonnes of gold have flowed into US COMEX warehouses, pushing inventories close to COVID-era highs. The futures premium over spot prices widened to as much as $40–$50 per ounce, while gold lease rates briefly spiked to 5%, reflecting temporary tightness. However, London still holds around 8,500 tonnes of gold, and key stress indicators are already cooling. The recent disruption appears to be driven more by precautionary repositioning than by actual supply shortages.
  • Japan Fiscal Policy Outlook Post Election: IMF Backs BOJ Rate Hikes, but Also Warns of Rising Debt Risks
Japan Fiscal Policy is at a critical crossroads as the IMF urges continued monetary tightening and cautions against fresh tax cuts that could widen fiscal risks. While expansionary measures and sustained government spending may support growth and maintain market confidence in the short term, Japan’s already elevated debt levels and rising borrowing costs pose long-term challenges. With the Bank of Japan gradually raising rates and global investors closely watching the yen and liquidity flows, Japan Fiscal Policy decisions will play a crucial role not only in shaping the country’s economic stability but also in influencing global financial markets.

  • Digital Gold Buying Surges to Rs 3,900 Crore via UPI, Even as SEBI Flags Investor Risks
Digital Gold : January 2026 saw a record surge in digital gold buying, with ₹39 billion (US$432 million) transacted via UPI, marking a 90% month-on-month and over fourfold year-on-year increase. In volume terms, around 2.6 tonnes of gold were purchased — a 70% rise from December 2025 — driven by all-time high domestic and international gold prices, ease of online transactions, and low minimum investments. Yet, SEBI warns that unlike Gold ETFs, commodity derivatives, and Electronic Gold Receipts (EGRs), digital gold operates outside the regulator’s purview, exposing investors to counterparty and operational risks with no investor protection under securities laws.

The move is expected to restore liquidity, improve capital efficiency for traders, and revive participation in the futures segment.

GJEPC said the rollback of punitive duties and the possibility of zero-duty access for select diamond and gemstone categories could help stabilise operations, rebuild confidence across the value chain, and deliver a much-needed boost to exports following a sharp 44% decline in shipments to the U.S. during 2025.
